HOW IT WORKS:GENEVA MECHANISM

We mechanical engineers know about theGeneva Mechanism.
Ever wondered how to convert a continuous rotatory motion to an intermittent one? Well, the Geneva drive, or commonly called the Maltese Cross, is all that you need.
As you can see, for one complete revolution of the driving wheel (left one), the driven wheel (right one) rotates only one-sixth of a revolution, thus making the output intermittent. The rotation frequency of the driven wheel can be changed by changing the number of slots in it.
Even though the official patent of this mechanism credits Thomson Albert R as its inventor in 1940s, uses of this mechanism date back to 1890s in film projectors. It has a variety of applications:
Mechanical Watches
Interestingly, its usage in watches have attributed the name Geneva, because Switzerland was an important center of watchmaking then. Initially, this was used as a stop work in vintage mechanical watches which use a wound up spring for the watch’s movement. It functioned as a stop work by limiting the torque exerted by the mainspring and essentially provided watches a stable run.
Did you wonder how the date was changed on mechanical watches before the arrival of digital ones? Simple. A variant of Geneva mechanism was used in combination with some gears which changed date once a day!
Interior of “Prim Sport II, calibre 68, vintage diving watch”, the Geneva mechanism (both driven and driving wheel) can be spotted.
The most famous “Iron Ring Clock” made by students of McMaster University, Canada, is a giant clock which uses a Geneva mechanism for the motion of its hour ring i.e. to increment the hour ring once per hour.
Old Movie Projectors
Remember the old projectors, where a wheel containing the film rotates in front of a light source to project movie on screen? As we know, an image can persist in human eye up to one-twenty-fifth of a second and this persistence of vision is taken advantage by the motion pictures by projecting and changing discrete images within a specific time to trick the brain into actually watching a continuous scene. Generally, a theatrical film runs at 24 frames per second.
This is where Geneva Mechanism steps in! The intermittent output of a Geneva drive upon supplying constant rotatory input, will be used to accurately drive the film at the same time rate which is needed. And because of the wheel’s motion in tandem with the movement of the shutter (which blocks the light source at very small time intervals), the motion of the film cannot be seen by the audience.
Modern film projectors, however, are now using stepper motors instead to achieve the required intermittent motion.
Today
Today, this classic mechanism is used in indexing of milling machines with automatic tool changers, changing of tolls in CNC machines, currency note counting machines, indexing in assembly lines, and more.

Why diesel engines can't be used in two wheelers?

Diesel engines can’t be used in two wheelers:
It is because diesel engines don’t use a spark plug. It uses heat of compression. It creates a flame, stress is more because of which size of the engine should be more. It obviously increases the weight of the vehicle. A diesel engine also have knocking behavior which creates more vibrations.
A diesel engine needs a fuel-injection system. These extra things need more space. Space and weight limitations are there. So a diesel engine is not advisable to be used in two wheelers.
A high compression ratio is also one of the major factoear. It means high pressure in the cylinder.
In spite of these limitations there were bikes with diesel engines.

How Giraffes sleep?¿ seems quite uncomfortable!

If cat is known for their ability can sleep at anywhere as they want, then giraffe might be the animals have most difficulty in sleeping and you probably don’t even catch a giraffe sleeping. The fact is giraffes have the shortest sleep requirements of any mammal, sleeping an average of just 30 minutes per day. Hence, if you want to have some shots of giraffe sleeping, you know a lot of patience.
As the tallest animal, it is difficult to lie down or get up quickly, sleeping is a huge liability. And due to their long necks, no matter how they look like in the photos, it seems quite uncomfortable to most of us. We might even think how they can fall asleep when their necks bent like these. But this is actually how giraffe sleeps.

Royal Enfield ,A journey of three centuries

Thumping sound of a motorcycle survived many centuries, overcame many historical milestones, changed hands of many owners, still this mean machine has evolved, sustained and evergreen in the minds of motor cycle fans & enthusiasts. Enfield cycle company was founded in 1893 , they manufactured motorcycles, bicycles, lawn movers and stationary engines. From 1914 motor cycle was used largely in by British army in the First World War, also supplied motorcycles to imperial Russian army. In 1921 it developed new 976cc twin engine, In 1924 it launched first Enfield four stroke 350cc engine. But company faced depression in 1930’s but kept on going with it reserves, later company’s founder died, followed by one of its partner in 1931. When second world war again came to the scene, British army called royal Enfield company to manufacture military motorcycles capable of taking tough tasks and difficult terrains, they were also involved in manufacturing other equipment meant for military use as well.
Post world war II Royal Enfield resumed production of the single cylinder over head valve engines of 350& 500 ccs , In 1948 it developed road going model fit for general commute which offered popular and comfortable ride , 500cc model was also introduced , In 1950’s the manufacturing right was sold to India there after royal Enfield motorcycle started the path to become Indianised. Owning a bullet was considered a pride because of his thumping sound, comfortable ride , which is tuned to survive India’s harsh road conditions. We have started from where the British left , like we being colonized by them for a decade left us in the middle like bruised , looted and deprived , But we survived in the midst all those hardships, Like this no other automobile brand has survived for three centuries in spite of several hurdles .
In 1955 , The Redditch company partnered with Madras motors in India to form Enfield India to assemble Royal Enfield motor cycles under the license , in 1990 royal Enfield India collaborated with Eicher group and later in 1994 it got merged and became part of the Eicher Group , Today this ever green marquee name has significantly improved the fortunes of this company ,presently royal Enfield owns several new models, contemporary designs , improved network of dealerships and renewed global presence. In February 2015 as per the report “ Royal Enfield global sales races past the Milwaukee born Harley Davidson ,
Yes even after three centuries of struggles , competition in automobile space , other international motorcycle brands opening & operating their outlets in India to woe youngsters , motorcycle aficionados , But this Iconic brand has survived , sustained by creating special place in the minds of many Indians who dreams of owning a powerful motor cycle , one name which comes to their mind is Royal Enfield Bullet. Even in the bourses also Eicher’s stock is riding high those who are wise enough to tape the opportunity by owning the stock 10 to 15years back would have become millionaires by now , today it has market cap of 505.4 billion and its shares trading at Rs 18,592. So by all means the journey of this iconic brand is illustrious & marvelous which no other automobile brand could ever think off

Farm Machines - concept ideation

The farm machines – looked always as a functional product and neglected in terms of a design touch.

Through design we could enhance the usability, give a good feel when using the product, give it an identity, enhanced user comfort by designing around the touch points and giving an ultimate satisfaction of the product usage for the user.

You won't believe it, but BMW did this....

Incredible innovations by an incredible car brand. BMW did it again, they created something spectacular.
Bavarian Motor Works, commonly known as BMW, is a German automobile, motorcycle and engine manufacturing company founded in 1916. BMW is headquartered in MunichBavaria, Germany. It also owns and produces Mini cars, and is the parent company of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. BMW produces motorcycles under BMW Motorrad, and plug-in electric cars under the BMW i sub-brand.
The BMW i8, the “i” standing for innovation, is a plug-in hybrid sports car developed by, guess who, BMW. This 2-door coupĂ© represents the new BMW Innovations campaign which was launched at the beginning of September 2014.

The BMW Innovations campaign shows to follow that innovations is at the core of everything we do. This national campaign highlights the elevating technology across the entire range of BMW models.
More about the BMW i8:
Also called BMW Concept Vision Efficient DynamicsThe BMW i8 can go from 0-100 km/h in 4.4 secondsHas a top speed of 250 km/hRelated car, the BMW i3The 2015 model year BMW i8 has a kWh lithium-ion battery packSold in almost 50 countries
More about the Innovations campaign:
This advertising campaign focuses on BMW’s concept of technology-sharing across model lines. It also shows some i8 features will end up in more affordable BMW’s.
The three television commercials, released on 1 September 2014, show how groundbreaking technological innovations we have seen in the BMW i8will migrate across the greater BMW family. In the BMW universe, the 3 Series, 5 Series, and X3 are in a different galaxy than the i8, but through technology transfer, those models can share i8 traits.
“Looking Forward” uses cinematography to illustrate that the BMW i8’s Full-Color Head-Up Display is also available in the BMW 3 Series. The Full-Color Head-Up Display projects important driving information, including speed limit, and assistance systems displays, including current speed, navigation and collision warnings, into the driver’s field of view.
“Change” focuses on the impressive LED headlight technology as the BMW i8 dramatically transforms into the BMW 5 Series. It draws attention to Adaptive LED Headlights to provide brighter lighting and can turn in the direction the vehicle is traveling to provide optimal road illumination in every condition.
“Eyes Everywhere” takes viewers on a cross-dimensional journey through the BMW i8’s iDrive screen to reveal Surround View Camera System in the BMW X3. The Surround View Camera System provides a 360° panorama view around the vehicle, which assists drivers while parking, maneuvering in tight situations or when navigating in areas with limited visibility.
The television campaign will coordinate with a “tech drive” program in BMW dealerships across the U.S. Customers can experience first-hand the leading-edge innovations shown in the videos. This advertising blitz also includes digital media programs, all built around increasing awareness that the technologies that are part of what makes the BMW i8 so desirable are available in other models as well.
Throughout the history of cars, leading-edge technology first demonstrated on race cars, concept cars, and top-of-the-line extreme production cars have eventually filtered down to the cars that are affordable and can be enjoyed. BMW seems to be accelerating that process with some of the i8’s technology and the company, through these commercials spots, wants to make sure we know about it.
BMW. The Ultimate Driving Machine.
